A new headache for CFOs and a healthy cure option
Now that almost the entire population of the UAE has health insurance, premiums are now a significant P&L item and are new to many CFOs. The drivers of this cost are legislation, member utilisation of benefits, medical inflation and employee health. Employers have direct influence over only one of these drivers...the health of their employees. Consilient believes that there will now be a move towards the "involuntary" establishment of workplace wellness schemes as the only tool employers have to contain their health insurance costs. Consilient's 2nd Health Insurance Roundtable (detailed summary available)
On 30 April Consilient held its second biannual roundtable at The Capital Club in Dubai attended by 28 CEOs and other senior leaders from the healthcare insurance sector. Representatives of insurers, reinsurers, brokers, TPAs, hospitals, legal and actuarial firms discussed challenges and opportunities in the local markets. The group was then joined by Dr Haidar Al Yousuf, Director Health Funding of Dubai Health Authority and Deputy Director Mr Ali Fareed Lutfi to answer questions and provide an update on developments in Dubai. The purpose is to provide a forum for market participants to give feedback in confidence which Consilient then submits to all concerned
regulators. If you would like to receive a detailed summary of the discussion please request at the link below.

With the UAE and Saudi national populations largely benefiting from government provision of healthcare and the expatriate population now primarily having health insurance, a big question facing health insurance market participants is "Where now for growth?"
With 50 insurers selling health insurance in UAE and 26 claims management companies all fighting for market share a number of companies are seeking our help to identify overseas markets that can produce a satisfactory RoI,
can offer scale and are undergoing an expansion of universal health coverage. We are advising clients to broaden their horizons beyond just GCC or MENA and consider western Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Health Management and Disease Prevention as a cost containment tool
Whilst their primary focus is on claims adjudication, very few insurance or claims management companies in MENA have comprehensive programs designed to manage health insurance utilisation or prevent lifestyle disease from developing in the first place.
At Consilient, we are working with clients to develop programs that are designed to help insured members better manage their own health conditions and take steps to minimise the risks of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes,
hypertension, hyperlipidemia and obesity. To find out more email us by clicking below.
